Rose Gold
Blooms As The
New High-Fashion Color
The soft, luscious blush color of rose
gold is gaining new popularity this season with designers of
all types of jewelry. It’s fresh, flattering, and fun to
wear because it blends so well with all kinds of flesh
tones.
The
warn look of rose, pink, and even peach colored gold also
combines beautifully with the season’s more popular pastel
gemstones…pink tourmaline, pink and violet sapphires,
amethyst, pale blue topaz, light green peridot, and soft
yellow citrine. It also goes well with pink and other pastel
colored freshwater pearls, and the rich pastel shades of
Tahitian pearls.
Rose or pink gold is produced by adding a small amount of
copper to the alloy. The more copper, the “redder” the
alloy. Peach gold is a new orangy-pink alloy that looks
especially attractive with clear, white diamonds.
This season, many fashion-forward designers are offering new
two-tone jewelry styles combining pink and white gold, or
pink gold and platinum in elegant rings, pendants, pins,
earrings, bracelets, and necklaces.
It’s a trend that many men have already discovered:
masculine rings and watch cases in rose gold or two-tone
rose gold and platinum or titanium.

The World
of Unusual Gemstones
Orange-Pink
Padparadscha Sapphire
This beautiful gem from Ceylon (now
Sir Lanka) is famous for combining orange and pink colors in
soft pastel shades akin to water colors. Only sapphires with
light to medium tones of pinkish orange or orange-pink hues
can legitimately be called padparadscha. This subtle mixture
of colors has been compared to everything from luscious
slices of smoked Scottish salmon to tropical sunsets.
The
term “padparadscha” is derived from the ancient Sanscrit
word (padmaraga) for the lotus flower and its color. From
there it makes its way into German (padparaschan) and
finally arrives as a term applied to a specific orange-pink
color of sapphire.
This description does not apply to the so-called “African
padparadschas” from the Umba region of Tanzania. Although
these gems are beautiful as fancy sapphires, they have too
much brown and orange to meet the standard of true
orange-pink padparadschas.
Like all sapphires, padparadschas have brilliant color, high
durability and a sparkling luster. The best examples of this
rare and beautiful form of corundum are at least five carats
in size because it takes a certain amount of body mass to
get the full color saturation in the right balance and
intensity.
